Winter is Coming! NAPE, that is.

Winter is Coming! NAPE, that is.
As many of you know, Winter NAPE is quickly approaching.  So if you haven’t marked your calendars, February 5-8, 2013 is when you should be in Houston, Texas.  Just to catch up everyone else, NAPE is a twice yearly convention designed to allow vendors to buy, sell, and trade oil and gas properties.  Not only are operators represented, but other vendors which service the oil and gas industry also purchase booth space to advertise their brand.  There is a variety of events which surround the main exhibitor show. NAPE Icebreaker Event Wednesday, February 6 – 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM ...

The IRWA: Is It Right For You?

The IRWA: Is It Right For You?
You often hear landmen talking about the AAPL (American Association of Professional Landmen), but it’s not as often that you hear about the IRWA (International Right of Way Association).  In fact, it’s fairly common to meet right of way agents who aren’t familiar with the IRWA.  I think it is a good organization, and that more than a few of you might benefit from including them in your professional networking portfolio. You might think, from the name, that it is comprised of only right of way agents, but you couldn’t be further from the truth.  The IRWA has members from ...

Experience: Our Way of Evaluating Landmen is Hurting our Industry

Experience: Our Way of Evaluating Landmen is Hurting our Industry
A demon that has always been lurking in the corner in our business is how we decide how much someone is worth.  Think about the last time you recommended someone to your supervisor.  The first question they asked was probably “How many years of experience does he/she have?”.  Occasionally you’ll get the “send me their resume” or the preferred “are they good?”, you might even get a “Do you want the person on your team?” line from particularly bright supervisors. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that using “years of experience” as an indicator of skill is ...

Don’t Sell Your Clients Work!

Don't Sell Your Clients Work!
So there has been some trouble brewing after a company bought a booth at Summer NAPE and advertised that they were brokering the sale of title information in certain shale plays.  As you might imagine, that ruffled a few feathers. So some questions started getting thrown around to different operators and attorneys:  In what world does a field landman own the title data he compiles on behalf of his client?  The answer:  In lala-land!  So one might wonder how this ‘title broker’ felt he could get around the legal entanglement of selling other companies data without compensating them.  He simply ...

Landman Certifications – RL, RPL, CPL

Landman Certifications - RL, RPL, CPL
Let’s first get on the same page.  I’m not talking about attending a certificate program, I’m also not talking about getting certified by some organization other than the AAPL.  I’m talking about certifications that are available from the AAPL by completing all the requirements.  There are three certifications available, RL – Registered Landman, RPL – Registered Professional Landman, and CPL – Certified Professional Landman. Becoming a CPL is just a ‘symptom of success’ for those individuals. These certifications are available by meeting specific requirements; an experience requirement based on how long you have performed land work, a sponsorship requirement verifying ...

Landman Schools – Will They Help You?

I get emails all the time from folks that want to be landmen, and they are mostly asking what they have to do to get a shot.  Inevitably the subject of “Landman Schools’ comes up more than occasionally.  Now you should take my comments with a grain of salt, because I’ve never been to a landman school — BUT I have been around the block a few times and I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.  Want to know what my thoughts are about these companies?  Read On! Landman schools seem to pop up whenever a new play ...

AAPL – Joint Operating Agreements Class

AAPL - Joint Operating Agreements Class
I recently attended a seminar called Joint Operating Agreements, Exploration and Participation Agreements, hosted by the AAPL, taught by Dorsey Roach, CPL.  Not having much direct experience with these type of agreements, other than reading them, I assumed that I stood to learn quite a bit.  I was pleasantly surprised by the 2-day course, and found it very informative. While the title of course might lead you to think that it only addresses joint operating agreements, Mr. Roach also broached the topic of Participation Agreements and Exploration Agreements.  He feels that these agreements are being used much more often, and in ...

It’s a Tough World For a Lone Landman.

It seems like no matter what time of year it is, or whether the market is good or bad, there are always landmen out there who need jobs.  One feature I’ve noticed is that if a landman is consistently having trouble finding a new contract it is because they have a poor network to draw on.  Developing your network of fellow landmen before you need to use it is the most important thing you can do for your career.  Many people do a few parts of my ‘Networking List’, but one or two things doesn’t give you results.  You need ...
