35 Reasons to Join the AAPL

35 Reasons to Join the AAPL
We are finally getting to a point where I don’t hear arguments from landmen (particuarly field landmen) against joining the AAPL on a regular basis.  However, there are still a few naysayers out there, and if you aren’t a member you might not be aware of the the AAPL Company Recognition Program.  It’s pretty important that you are aware of it, because it affects those who are not members. What is the AAPL Company Recognition Program?  The following is taken directly from the latest issue of Landman magazine:The following oil and gas companies and brokerage firms have made the commitment to ...

Annual Industry Conferences for Land Professionals

Annual Industry Conferences for Land Professionals
I’ve written quite a few article about the importance of continuing education to keep your skills current and also to grow your professional network.  I had a chance to attend the AAPL Annual Convention in Washington, DC in 2013 — it was a great experience.  If your company doesn’t sponsor a trip to these events on your behalf, they can be an expensive proposition.  That’s why I’m going to tell you about three major upcoming conferences in 2014 that you can budget and plan to attend. This early in the year details can be light on topics and speakers, but ...

NAPE 2014 – It’s Coming!

NAPE 2014 - It's Coming!
I wanted to send everyone a quick reminder that NAPE 2014 is quickly approaching on February 5-7.  It’s a great even to attend and see friends, old and new.  You might be wondering why I am posting this now, since NAPE is still over a month away… it’s because you only have one day left to purchase your tickets at the discounted rate of $250.  On January 1st the price goes up to $365, so if you haven’t registered yet — you really should do so right now. Most of your know that having a successful time a NAPE requires some ...

The AAPL Member Directory – An Indispensable Tool

The AAPL Member Directory - An Indispensable Tool
One of the benefits of joining the AAPL is that you receive a printed member directory, and you also gain access to the electronic member directory available on the AAPL website.  This tool has become very useful over the years, and today I’d like to talk about some of the various ways in which I use it. The almost 500 page reference book starts out by including some great information that is generally useful to AAPL members.  The first 50 pages encompass background information about the AAPL membership types, award programs & recipients, contact information on AAPL executive members and ...

AAPL Annual Meeting 2013 – A Quick Recap

AAPL Annual Meeting 2013 - A Quick Recap
I had the opportunity to attend the AAPL Annual Meeting last week and I wanted to share some thoughts about it.  I won’t go into too much detail on the the particular events, education or festivities — but if you’d to see more about it then you can check it out at the AAPL Annual Meeting website page. As some of you know, I don’t work as a full-time employee for an oil & gas company.  This means that I had to make the decision to pay for the cost of attending this function myself.  It was not inexpensive after ...

SB873 in Texas To Require Permits for O&G Water Wells

SB873 in Texas To Require Permits for O&G Water Wells
Current law exempts oil and gas companies from the permitting requirement for wells used for “drilling or exploration”.  However, SB873, a bill in the Texas legislature hopes to change that by requiring a permit for wells used by oil & gas operators.  TIPRO has been attempting negotiating a compromise on this bill, but recently informed the AAPL that those negotiations had not been successful. Jim Dewbre, President of the AAPL, sent out a letter today urging a grass-roots effort for those with business in Texas to contact their state representatives to defeat this bill.  As per the letter, this bill ...

What Have You Done This Month to Better Yourself? A Challenge.

What Have You Done This Month to Better Yourself? A Challenge.
Over the last few months I’ve gotten so many phone calls and emails from great people in the land business who are looking for work.  One of the first things I always ask them is “What have you done lately?”  The answer I usually get is some variation of “well I was working for so and so and doing this and that and then the plug got pulled on the project.”  Then I have to re-phrase my question, and ask them what they’ve done for their own professional development lately.  More often than not I get a bit of silence ...

NAPE East 2013 – Who is Exhibiting?

NAPE East 2013 - Who is Exhibiting?
I’ve been hearing a lot of discussion about NAPE East lately.  The event is being held April 10th-12th in Pittsburgh, PA, and it will be very similar to the NAPE we are all familiar with.  Albeit in a smaller form (at least to start with!).  There has been a good deal of conversation between people trying to decide whether to go this year, or see what attendance is like and consider going next year. In an attempt to help some of you make the decision I wrangled a (partial) list of the exhibitors at NAPE East for 2013.  So here’s ...

Winter NAPE 2013 – A Great Time!

Winter NAPE 2013 - A Great Time!
I have to tell you, I had a great time at NAPE this year.  I got to meet up with some great folks.  I talked to Austin Brister, the editor and writer over at The Title Examiner blog – I hope that he was able to wander around NAPE on his own instead of hanging out over at the Sadler Law booth all day.  I unfortunately did miss seeing the folks from DrillingInfo I talk to regularly, specifically the editor of the DrillingInfo Wireline Blog, James Hahn II. I’ve also decided that before 2014 I absolutely have to learn at ...

Surprise! You Get a Calendar!

Surprise! You Get a Calendar!
(If you are an AAPL member!)   Today I got a huge, flat envelope in the mail from the AAPL, and I couldn’t imagine what they could be sending me.  After I got into it I found a sweet calendar and the always anticipated November / December edition of Landman magazine!  They did a great job not only including all the scheduled educational events on the calendar, but also adding a fair amount of extra information on the ‘top’ of the calendar pages.  It looks like this calendar is replacing the typically mailed out 2012 Annual Report. It’s nice to ...
