Review: TripLogik TL1000 Mileage Logger – Part 2

Review: TripLogik TL1000 Mileage Logger - Part 2
This review is a continuation of Review: TripLogik TL1000 Mileage Logger – Part 1 – Unboxing Well, I’ve had a week or so to use the TripLogik TL1000 and I’m ready to share my experience with everyone. Installation As mentioned in Part 1 of this review, the TripLogik GPS logger includes two different methods to power the device in your vehicle.  The first is a standard cigarette lighter adapter, and the second is a OBD II cable that plugs into a port underneath the dash of most 2006+ model vehicles.  I chose to use the OBD II port, because it ...

Why Your Client Hires Landmen Who Make Mistakes

Why Your Client Hires Landmen Who Make Mistakes
One of the more common complaints I hear from field landmen, particularly well experienced field landmen, is that brokers hire inexperienced people to work on and run projects.  The biggest reason I see thrown around for this is inexperienced hiring managers, careless brokers, and poor supervision from in-house landmen.  I’d counter that those issues are only a small part of the equation.  I’d say budgetary constraints and client driven needs are the bigger pieces of the puzzle. We’ve all seen those brokers who say “I need 20 landmen next week that live within 50 miles of <insert small rural town>.”  ...

Why People Should Pay For Things

Why People Should Pay For Things
People should pay for things.  Just in general, nobody appreciates things that they get for free.  Case in point, on my daily rotation is to check landmen.net every morning.  It’s not because I need a job, I just like to see who is hiring.  I think it’s interesting.  It’s also very interesting to see what, and how, people post jobs.  There are some people that I really want to email and just tell them (Pulp Fiction style) “You stop posting today, right now.  And when you stop, you stay stopped, or you be stopped.  You lost all your job posting ...

Review: TripLogik TL1000 Mileage Logger – Part 1 – Unboxing

Review: TripLogik TL1000 Mileage Logger - Part 1 - Unboxing
Today I received the new TL1000 GPS mileage logger from TripLogik that I talked about in my earlier blog, GPS Logging – The Best Way to Track Business Mileage. It came shipped from Canada, so allow for the $21 shipping cost.  I initially wonder if there is a less expensive shipping option, as my earlier GPS logger (Milo by SatLogix) didn’t charge me any shipping fee.  Although the unit cost was $30 higher.  Perhaps SatLogix just built the price of shipping into the unit. The unit arrived well packaged, and it took about 10 days to receive it.  I don’t ...

Don’t Sell Your Clients Work!

Don't Sell Your Clients Work!
So there has been some trouble brewing after a company bought a booth at Summer NAPE and advertised that they were brokering the sale of title information in certain shale plays.  As you might imagine, that ruffled a few feathers. So some questions started getting thrown around to different operators and attorneys:  In what world does a field landman own the title data he compiles on behalf of his client?  The answer:  In lala-land!  So one might wonder how this ‘title broker’ felt he could get around the legal entanglement of selling other companies data without compensating them.  He simply ...

The Many Names of a Landman in the 21st Century

Now that  trend among the larger brokerage firms is breaking job functions down into small bite size pieces, the true landman who does it all is becoming more rare — and more of a commodity.  I often hear questions (mostly from newer landmen) regarding what a particular job title means.  I thought I’d recap a few that are commonly used.  Be aware that I’m specifically excluding slang terms like ‘lease hound’ and “courthouse monkey”.  Some of these terms will have similar terms used for them, but the point should be apparent: Lease Agent – This is probably the most prevalent ...

GPS Logging – The Best Way to Track Business Mileage

Update: I’ve completed a comprehensive review of the product mentioned in this blog. I’ve begun my review of the TripLogik TL1000:  Review: TripLogik TL1000 Mileage Logger – Part 1 – Unboxing Part 2 of my review can be found here: Review: TripLogik TL1000 Mileage Logger – Part 2 This year I began using a GPS device track my mileage for a few reasons: I wanted to be able to substantiate my mileage write-offs in an audit. I am too lazy to reliably keep a mileage log. I now don’t get reimbursed for mileage, but I still write it off. Ever ...

Does Your Client Know What A Pugh Clause Is?

Now, I know you are all reading this because you said “of course everyone who isn’t a moron knows what a pugh clause is.”  However, after an interesting discussion on LinkedIn (see here) several months back I began specifically asking my clients how they defined a vertical and horizontal pugh clause.  I got more than one answer, and it opened my eyes to a way that one could easily make mistakes for their client. Why?  Because the ‘old’ way most companies (and many still do) defined a vertical pugh is as a depth severance after the primary term.  Likewise, they ...

Landman Certifications – RL, RPL, CPL

Landman Certifications - RL, RPL, CPL
Let’s first get on the same page.  I’m not talking about attending a certificate program, I’m also not talking about getting certified by some organization other than the AAPL.  I’m talking about certifications that are available from the AAPL by completing all the requirements.  There are three certifications available, RL – Registered Landman, RPL – Registered Professional Landman, and CPL – Certified Professional Landman. Becoming a CPL is just a ‘symptom of success’ for those individuals. These certifications are available by meeting specific requirements; an experience requirement based on how long you have performed land work, a sponsorship requirement verifying ...
