Why Am I in the Energy Business?

Why Am I in the Energy Business?
We're getting close to the holidays and I wanted to take some time to reflect on what this business is for me and what it has done for me and my family.  I've done a few things over the years... bought leases, negotiated rights-of-way, researched title, lease data entry, built division order decks, and a host of other things in between.  It isn't always great... Commodity pricing goes up and down, public sentiment varies widely depending on where you are and who you represent, and the ever-present specter of trying to keep your network intact and staying relevant in a ...

People Who Create Content in the Land Business

People Who Create Content in the Land Business
Earlier last year I published a post detailing websites that I often visit.  That post still gets a lot of traffic, and my original intention was to write an article detailing the people that create content that is relevant to me as a land professional in the oil & gas industry.  I quickly found out that my list wasn’t long enough to make an article out of, so I thought I just needed to look a little harder…. I went through 2 months of twitter feeds, the last month of LinkedIn, and about 6 months of emails to find people who ...

Annual Industry Conferences for Land Professionals

Annual Industry Conferences for Land Professionals
I’ve written quite a few article about the importance of continuing education to keep your skills current and also to grow your professional network.  I had a chance to attend the AAPL Annual Convention in Washington, DC in 2013 — it was a great experience.  If your company doesn’t sponsor a trip to these events on your behalf, they can be an expensive proposition.  That’s why I’m going to tell you about three major upcoming conferences in 2014 that you can budget and plan to attend. This early in the year details can be light on topics and speakers, but ...

The Biggest Company You’ve Never Heard Of

The Biggest Company You've Never Heard Of
What does Marquette Exploration, Oasis Petroleum, Petrohawk Energy, Plains All American Pipeline, Marlin Resources, Halcon Resources, Peregrine Oil & Gas, Phillips Energy Partners and Venado Oil & Gas have in common?  They are all funded by the same private equity company, EnCap Investments L.P.  I think it’s important for land professionals to understand the financing side of the energy business, and EnCap’s investments have a more significant effect on our industry than many realize. The Company EnCap was formed in 1988, and over the years has raised over $18 billion dollars towards funding independent oil & gas companies in the ...

NAPE 2014 – It’s Coming!

NAPE 2014 - It's Coming!
I wanted to send everyone a quick reminder that NAPE 2014 is quickly approaching on February 5-7.  It’s a great even to attend and see friends, old and new.  You might be wondering why I am posting this now, since NAPE is still over a month away… it’s because you only have one day left to purchase your tickets at the discounted rate of $250.  On January 1st the price goes up to $365, so if you haven’t registered yet — you really should do so right now. Most of your know that having a successful time a NAPE requires some ...

Outsource Your Land Administration

Outsource Your Land Administration
Oftentimes we hear about ‘outsourcing’ and we think negative thoughts.  Some of you may even be expecting to hear about how some company now has lease analysts or division order analysts based in India — although that isn’t what I’m talking about today.  I’d like to discuss a trend I’m seeing in small to medium sized operators that I believe is gaining speed.  I’ve seen a few companies capitalize on this concept by being innovative and ‘ahead of the curve’.  This trend I’m talking about is the outsourcing of land administration duties to outside service companies.  Most of these companies ...

AAPL Annual Meeting 2013 – A Quick Recap

AAPL Annual Meeting 2013 - A Quick Recap
I had the opportunity to attend the AAPL Annual Meeting last week and I wanted to share some thoughts about it.  I won’t go into too much detail on the the particular events, education or festivities — but if you’d to see more about it then you can check it out at the AAPL Annual Meeting website page. As some of you know, I don’t work as a full-time employee for an oil & gas company.  This means that I had to make the decision to pay for the cost of attending this function myself.  It was not inexpensive after ...

SB873 in Texas To Require Permits for O&G Water Wells

SB873 in Texas To Require Permits for O&G Water Wells
Current law exempts oil and gas companies from the permitting requirement for wells used for “drilling or exploration”.  However, SB873, a bill in the Texas legislature hopes to change that by requiring a permit for wells used by oil & gas operators.  TIPRO has been attempting negotiating a compromise on this bill, but recently informed the AAPL that those negotiations had not been successful. Jim Dewbre, President of the AAPL, sent out a letter today urging a grass-roots effort for those with business in Texas to contact their state representatives to defeat this bill.  As per the letter, this bill ...

Gloom and Doom: What’s a Landman to do?

Gloom and Doom: What's a Landman to do?
It’s probably safe to say that we have all personally experienced, or had a good friend who has personally experienced some downtime over the last few years.  The United States is swamped in uneconomic dry gas, and even some of the wet gas is not worth drilling.  Historic oil plays have been a place to hide, but by their very nature these plays require a certain amount of skill not all possess.  I’ve seen a ramp-up over the last six months of experienced landmen who are looking for work, and I thought it was time to put some thoughts down ...

NAPE East 2013 – Who is Exhibiting?

NAPE East 2013 - Who is Exhibiting?
I’ve been hearing a lot of discussion about NAPE East lately.  The event is being held April 10th-12th in Pittsburgh, PA, and it will be very similar to the NAPE we are all familiar with.  Albeit in a smaller form (at least to start with!).  There has been a good deal of conversation between people trying to decide whether to go this year, or see what attendance is like and consider going next year. In an attempt to help some of you make the decision I wrangled a (partial) list of the exhibitors at NAPE East for 2013.  So here’s ...
