Land Management Systems – An Overview
Land management systems (LMS) are used by a variety of companies to manage their assets. Some of the companies that utilize land systems are E&P companies, mining companies, law firms, pipeline companies, and royalty partnerships. These systems maintain an electronic catalog of leases, company owned fee lands, rights-of-way, unit designations, and any other type of agreement that may need to be tracked. These systems not only allow easy record keeping and reporting, but also provide help in managing those properties. When an organizations land assets become too complex to be managed via spreadsheet, it is time to evaluate the purchase ...

My Newest Networking Tool – WriteThat.name
As some of you might now, I occasionally write about companies or products that you will like, do really cool things, or meet a need that I have. A problem I have had for a while is that through all the social networking and emails I’ve amassed a ridiculously sized contacts database in Gmail. The size isn’t the problem though, my problem is that I couldn’t possibly take the time to update all the contacts as people move between companies, cities, and phone numbers. Everyone knows that I think networking is important, and you can’t network too well if you ...
The Young and the Restless: Old Hands vs New Blood
If you get enough landmen together for enough time, the conversation will eventually turn to criticism of whatever group isn’t represented. Whether it’s all the new landmen who who don’t dress the party, wear headphones and don’t know ‘nuthin — or the old luddite landmen who never do anything but tell stories about better times. Of course I have an opinion on the matter, just like everyone else, and if you haven’t had the ‘good fortune’ to be a part of one of these conversations then you don’t get out enough. We could make a mile long list of transgressions that ...
Faxing is Dead — I Need a Fax Machine.
I’ve come to realize that the only businesses in the oil & gas industry who use fax machines are the ones I need to do business with. I don’t know why that is… people always tell me that nobody uses fax machines anymore. I’ve got news for you, I do and it’s not by choice. It’s not every day, but several times I month I end up having to send something somewhere and it has to go by fax. Now mind you, I’m pretty computer savvy, I do all that blog ‘stuff’. I am completely capable of scanning a document ...
Skiptracing for Landmen and Land Managers
First, a little history of “skip-tracing” There are innumerable reasons as to why a person, usually referred to as a “skip”, needs to be located. They could be a witness required for an investigation, or perhaps have reneged on a recent bail bond or is a suspect in criminal activity; or as in the case of a missing mineral rights owner, is sought as a potential lessor. Regardless of the reason to locate someone it’s all called skip-tracing and the methods to locate an individual or “skip” are the same in almost every case. It’s my challenge to direct you ...
Review: Roku 2 XS
Yes, yes, I know. Half of you are thinking “What is a Roku 2 XS?” and the other half are thinking “Are you just figuring this out?” First off, yes I’m just figuring this out. Secondly, a Roku is a nifty little box that will stream movies, music, games, and all sorts of other cool stuff to your TV. I got one recently and I thought I would write a review on it. I also can imagine a third question. “Why the heck are you writing about it on a landman blog?” I think that a Roku is a great ...
Book Review: Landman Lease and Title Manual (Volume 1)
I had the opportunity over the last several weeks to review a new publication by John R. Childers and Joe W. Judd. It’s called the Landman Lease and Title Manual and is being sold on Amazon.com. The book description on Amazon is very straightforward: The Landman Lease and Title Manual is designed to impart upon the new and lightly experienced landman the essential skills and knowledge necessary to work in the oil and gas industry. The manual is not designed as a substitute for the traditional mentor-type learning characteristic of the oil and gas industry, nor is the manual a ...
Review: TripLogik TL1000 Mileage Logger – Part 2
This review is a continuation of Review: TripLogik TL1000 Mileage Logger – Part 1 – Unboxing Well, I’ve had a week or so to use the TripLogik TL1000 and I’m ready to share my experience with everyone. Installation As mentioned in Part 1 of this review, the TripLogik GPS logger includes two different methods to power the device in your vehicle. The first is a standard cigarette lighter adapter, and the second is a OBD II cable that plugs into a port underneath the dash of most 2006+ model vehicles. I chose to use the OBD II port, because it ...
Review: TripLogik TL1000 Mileage Logger – Part 1 – Unboxing
Today I received the new TL1000 GPS mileage logger from TripLogik that I talked about in my earlier blog, GPS Logging – The Best Way to Track Business Mileage. It came shipped from Canada, so allow for the $21 shipping cost. I initially wonder if there is a less expensive shipping option, as my earlier GPS logger (Milo by SatLogix) didn’t charge me any shipping fee. Although the unit cost was $30 higher. Perhaps SatLogix just built the price of shipping into the unit. The unit arrived well packaged, and it took about 10 days to receive it. I don’t ...
