Gloom and Doom: What’s a Landman to do?

Gloom and Doom: What's a Landman to do?
It’s probably safe to say that we have all personally experienced, or had a good friend who has personally experienced some downtime over the last few years.  The United States is swamped in uneconomic dry gas, and even some of the wet gas is not worth drilling.  Historic oil plays have been a place to hide, but by their very nature these plays require a certain amount of skill not all possess.  I’ve seen a ramp-up over the last six months of experienced landmen who are looking for work, and I thought it was time to put some thoughts down ...

What Have You Done This Month to Better Yourself? A Challenge.

What Have You Done This Month to Better Yourself? A Challenge.
Over the last few months I’ve gotten so many phone calls and emails from great people in the land business who are looking for work.  One of the first things I always ask them is “What have you done lately?”  The answer I usually get is some variation of “well I was working for so and so and doing this and that and then the plug got pulled on the project.”  Then I have to re-phrase my question, and ask them what they’ve done for their own professional development lately.  More often than not I get a bit of silence ...

NAPE East 2013 – Who is Exhibiting?

NAPE East 2013 - Who is Exhibiting?
I’ve been hearing a lot of discussion about NAPE East lately.  The event is being held April 10th-12th in Pittsburgh, PA, and it will be very similar to the NAPE we are all familiar with.  Albeit in a smaller form (at least to start with!).  There has been a good deal of conversation between people trying to decide whether to go this year, or see what attendance is like and consider going next year. In an attempt to help some of you make the decision I wrangled a (partial) list of the exhibitors at NAPE East for 2013.  So here’s ...

HAPL South Texas Social 2013 – A Great Event

HAPL South Texas Social 2013 - A Great Event
I had the good fortune to attend the HAPL South Texas Social Thursday night (March 21, 2013), and I must admit that I had a great time (along with about 200 others).  I’ve never been to Armadillo Palace, but it was a great venue.  You’ll know you’ve found Armadillo Palace when you see the HUGE armadillo outside the building.  The South Texas Social Committee, headed up by Joe Dichiara, did a great job.  The process of getting a name tag and armband at the door was quick and painless, and they even had door prizes (yours truly won one!).  I ...

The Young and the Restless: Old Hands vs New Blood

The Young and the Restless: Old Hands vs New Blood
If you get enough landmen together for enough time, the conversation will eventually turn to criticism of whatever group isn’t represented. Whether it’s all the new landmen who who don’t dress the party, wear headphones and don’t know ‘nuthin — or the old luddite landmen who never do anything but tell stories about better times. Of course I have an opinion on the matter, just like everyone else, and if you haven’t had the ‘good fortune’ to be a part of one of these conversations then you don’t get out enough. We could make a mile long list of transgressions that ...

10 Reasons My Resume Doesn’t Look Like Yours

10 Reasons My Resume Doesn't Look Like Yours
Well, maybe it’s an over-statement that my resume doesn’t look like anyone else’s resume.  My point is that my resume doesn’t follow the ‘normal’ rules, let’s call it the “new normal”.  It’s not that my resume contains any secrets that get it any more consideration, and I’m not doing anything that you can’t find other people talking about on the internet.  Regardless, I think that the old ways of job searching are changing, and our resumes should as well. 1.  I’m American, and Americans don’t have those little squiggly lines, dashes, and dots on their words.  So I don’t get ...

Your Words Matter, So Double Check Them

Your Words Matter, So Double Check Them
Whether you are interacting online, by mail, or in person the words you choose are important.  Equally important is the way you use them.  Snap judgements will be made about you based on spelling, grammar, and context.  Now, I know that many of you are thinking “oh great here comes the spelling police…”  So I’m going to try to sway your judgement with a few examples I’ve seen lately, I’ll try to anonymize them enough to protect the ignor-innocent. The first example is the picture you see above.  I’ll go ahead and tell you (if you haven’t figured it out) ...

Here We Go Again: Gasland Part 2 aka Josh Fox In a Tinfoil Hat

Here We Go Again: Gasland Part 2 aka Josh Fox In a Tinfoil Hat
Well, we’ve been hearing that the sequel to the documentary, Gasland, has been coming for 2 years and it looks like it is finally within striking distance.  If you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years then you don’t know that Gasland is a 2010 documentary by Josh Fox that purported to shine a light on the dangers of fracking.  The original documentary has been most thoroughly debunked by a laundry list of experts, independent studies, and a recently released documentary, FrackNation.  Energy in Depth and the IPAA also produced a rebuttal documentary called TruthLand, although none ...

Landman Websites I Check Often

Landman Websites I Check Often
I thought I would do a quick post this week just detailing some of the places on the internet that I frequently visit.  I also felt that it would be a nice thing to give credit to these sources, as they often give me inspiration for the blogs I post here.  So without further ado, here is my list of places that I go: www.landpro.com/landnews.asp Paul Nielsen runs LandNews, and has done so for quite some time.  If you haven’t ever met Paul, he’s a great guy and does the industry a wonderful service by running LandNews.  He posts available ...

My Newest Promotional Tool – Moo MiniCards

My Newest Promotional Tool - Moo MiniCards
My wife, Hailey, recently got a set of these “MiniCards” for herself.  When she told me she ordered them I was thinking “Great, business cards, cool….”, but when they came in the mail they actually were pretty darn cool. These aren’t your ordinary business cards, they are about half the size and have some pretty neat options when you create them.  For instance, you can have a series of different images on the back of the cards instead of just being able to choose one single image.  The Moo.com website has one example of a real estate agent making a ...
